Royal Weddings at Westminster Abbey

Westminster AbbeyWestminster Abbey has hosted "only" 15 royal weddings in its long history.

Princess Patricia, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, began the modern trend for royal marriages at Westminster Abbey in 1919.

Richard, Earl of Cornwall (later King of Germany)

4 January 1243, Richard, Earl of Cornwall (later King of Germany), brother of King Henry III, to Sanchia of Provence (his second wife). Sanchia was sister of Eleanor of Provence, Henry III’s queen.

Joan of Acre, daughter of Edward I

30 April 1290, Joan of Acre, daughter of King Edward I, was married to Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester.

Margaret, daughter of Edward I

8 July 1290, Margaret, daughter of King Edward I, was married to John, son of the Duke of Brabant.

Richard II

20 January 1382, King Richard II was married to Anne, daughter of Emperor Charles IV of Bohemia and sister of King Wenceslas IV.  Two days later they were crowned in Westminster Abbey.

Patricia, Princess of Connaught

27 February 1919, Princess Patricia of Connaught, second daughter of Arthur, Duke of Connaught, third son to Queen Victoria, was married to Commander (subsequently Rear Admiral Sir) Alexander Ramsay.

Mary, Princess daughter of George V

28 February 1922, Princess Mary, only daughter of King George V, was married to Viscount Lascelles (later the Earl of Harewood).

George VI

26 April 1923, The Duke of York (later King George VI), second son of King George V, was married to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later to become The Queen Mother)

Edward, The Duke of Kent, fourth son of George V

29 November 1934, The Duke of Kent, fourth son of King George V, was married to Princess Marina of Greece.

 Elizabeth, Princess (later Queen Elizabeth II) & HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

20 November 1947, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), elder daughter of King George VI, was married to Prince Philip of Greece (later Duke of Edinburgh).

Margaret, Princess daughter of George VI

6 May 1960, Princess Margaret, second daughter of King George VI, was married to Antony Armstrong-Jones (later Earl of Snowdon).

Alexandra, Princess of Kent

24 April 1963, Princess Alexandra of Kent, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, was married to Angus Ogilvy, second son of the Earl of Airlie.

Anne, Princess daughter of Queen Elizabeth II

14 November 1973, Princess Anne, only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, was married to Captain Mark Phillips.

Andrew, Prince son of Queen Elizabeth II

23 July 1986, Prince Andrew, second son of Queen Elizabeth II, was married to Miss Sarah Ferguson.

The London Marathon starts in Greenwich Park every Spring.

Greenwich has a long heritage; it was the birth place of King Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary (Bloody Mary) and Queen Elizabeth I (The Virgin Queen).  All the English monarchs can be found at Royal History.

It has seen many famous visitors from Peter the Great through Charles Dickens to Bob Hope.  This and a lot more in Greenwich Past.
